About For Our Birds & Gardens

Hi, my name is John McCormick and I am the owner of FOR OUR BIRDS & GARDENS, a wild bird feeding and nature supply company. We are located in Burlington, Iowa, along the mighty Mississippi River.

I have always been interested in nature, in particular bird watching and bird feeding. My 100-year-old Aunt Fern Tainter was an exceptional birder with 726 birds on her life list. She was the oldest living bird bander in the United States.  My parents had a cabin along the river, and they enjoyed the outdoors. All of these experiences growing up helped shape my interest in nature.

I received my B.S. degree in Biology from Iowa Wesleyan College. I also attended Iowa State University and studied Fish and Wildlife Biology. After teaching science for ten years I changed fields and earned a Master's Degree in Counseling. I am retired from the Burlington Schools after 33 years as a science teacher, coach and guidance counselor. I am now able to devote my remaining years to birding, working on my seven-acre wildlife habitat/bird sanctuary, working at the bird shop and helping people on-line with their wild bird feeding hobby.

For Our Birds Garden Center

I really enjoy helping people make their yards wildlife friendly. We have offered native trees and shrubs to our local customers for four years. Native plants are so easy to care for, grow rapidly and are very inexpensive. I have planted over three thousand native trees and shrubs on my seven-acre wildlife habitat. Because of my interest in increasing habitat for birds and butterflies, we now offer native perennials and annuals for birds and butterflies. You may e-mail me at forourbirds@lisco.com or call 319-752-0804 to order plants. The easiest way to start your prairie is to prepare your area this summer and plant in the fall or spring.

I have completed the Master Gardener's program through our county extension office. I am a Certified Wildlife Habitat Naturalist.  I have an extensive library of books that you may want to peruse at your leisure. You will be able to view many beautiful pictures and get ideas of what you might want to do to your landscape. If you want information, we have many free plant lists and short articles on various wildlife and habitat topics.
